J. B. Schleich, born 1942 in Luxembourg, was promoted Master in Civil Engineering at the University of Liège in 1967. He experienced practical engineering during twelve years with the steel fabricator P.Wurth S.A. where he was responsible for the design of bridges and buildings. Between 1984 and 2002 he was leading the research department on steel construction of Profil ARBED in Luxembourg.

During the years 1984/85 and 1993/94 he was President of the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork, ECCS. He was Chairman of the “ECCS Promotions Management Board” from 1997 to 2003.

He is known through numerous publications and research reports dealing with the design of steel and composite structures. His work, covering as well normal service conditions as the accidental fire situation, reflects his profound general and technical knowledge.

In October 1996 he was honoured in Bremen through the “AUSZEICHNUNG des DEUTSCHEN STAHLBAUES".

Since 1992 he was giving lectures on composite construction at the University of Liège. It was in October 1998 that he was promoted Professor for the structural design at the same University. In May to July 2005 and from April to August 2007 he gave lectures on "fire safety in buildings" at the University of Aachen.

Furthermore a full set of lectures on "fire safety in buildings" was given by him at the University of Ljubljana from October 23rd to 25th, 2006 as well as at the Norwegian Structural Steel Association in Oslo from April 23rd to 24th, 2008.

He was Chairman for the final version of various European standards i.e EN 1993-1-1, 1-8, 1-9, 1-10 concerning steel construction, EN 1991-1-2 Actions on structures exposed to fire, as well as EN 1994-1-2 Design of composite structures in the fire situation.

By the end of 2005 he issued, in the frame of the Leonardo da Vinci Pilot Project CZ/02/B/F/PP- 134007 "Handbook 5, Design of buildings for the fire situation" comprising 250 pages.

The "Charles MASSONNET Award" was allocated to him on September 13th 2007, at the occasion of the Annual Meetings of the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork, ECCS.
