Mini Tours to ARCHEOLOGICAL SITES

By extending your stay in Turkey by a few days after the Symposium, you can use this opportunity to visit some of the most famous archeological sites of Asia Minor, namely Ionia & Lydia or the Cappadocia. The mini-tours are exclusively designed for delegates and accompanying persons and include accomodation in five-star hotels in half board, lunches, transfers and transport to archeological sites and museums with a professional English-speaking guide. Bookings should be made by 25 August 2010 to secure seats on domestic flights.

Mini tour 1 : Ionia and Lydia, 3 days / 2 nights in full board

1st day : İstanbul / İzmir (by air) , İzmir / Kuşadası (92 km)

Transfer to the airport for the morning flight to İzmir. Upon arrival proceed to the magnificient city of Ephesus, one of the most fascinating of the ancient world. The visit of Ephesus includes: Agora, the Odeon, the Nympheaum of Trajan, the Temple of Hadrian, the Celsius Library, the Theatre, the remains of the Temple of Artemis which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Museum and the House of the Virgin Mary. Lunch during the course of the visits. At the end of the visits, return to Kuşadası. Dinner and overnight.

2nd day : Kuşadası / Dydima / Kuşadası (140 km)

All day dedicated to explore the three main archeological sites: Dydima, Miletus and Priene. Visit the sancturay of Dydima with its colossal Temple of Apollo where crowds of pilgrims came to consult oracle. The sanctuary was connected by a sacred road to Miletus, which was homeland for philosophers such as Thales, Anaximander, Anaximenes and the town planner Hippodamus. Visit of Miletus includes: the Theatre, the Agora, the Bouleuterion, the Baths of Faustina, the Gymnasium, the Nymphaeum. Then, visit of Priene, the oldest city laid out on a Hippodamian plan: the Temple of Athena, the Agora, the Bouleuterion, the prytaneion, the Theatre. Lunch in course of the visits. At the end, return to Kuşadası. Dinner and overnight.

3rd day : Kuşadası / Bergama / İzmir (264 km) , İzmir / İstanbul (by air)

In the morning, departure for Bergama (ancient Pergamum), the capital of the Attalid dynasty where the parchment was invented. Visit the ancient city: the Acropolis with the ruins of the agoras, temples, palaces, the library which contained 200.000 volumes, the podium of Zeus Altar which was dismantled and sent to Berlin, the impressive theatre built on the hillside from where the panorama is wonderful. In the lower part, visit the Asclepion, a sanctuary and a healing center dedicated to the God of healing, Asclepius. Lunch during the course of the visits. At the end of the visits, return to İzmir to take the return flight to İstanbul. Upon arrival at İstanbul, transfer to the hotel.

Mini tour 2 : The Cappadocia , 3 days / 2 nights in full board

1st day : İstanbul / Kayseri (by air) , Kayseri /Cappadocia (61km)

Transfer to the airport for the morning flight to Kayseri. Upon arrival proceed to Cappadocia to explore this surrealistic region of Central Anatolia with Göreme Valley; an open-air museum with its frescoe painted rock-cut churches; Zelve valley with its old cave-dwellings, Paşabag with its fairy chimneys, Uchisar with its tufa rock crowned with a Citadel and the villages of Ortahisar and Avcılar and Avanos (a Hittite town named “ Zvinasa ” in origin); a small town located in the banks of the Kızılırmak (ancient Halys), famous with its pottery. Dinner and overnight.

2nd day : Cappadocia

In the morning, departure for the visit to the underground city of Derinkuyu; a labyrinth organized on several levels and used as shelter by the local people during the period of invasions, then visit to Eskigümüs Monastery where beautiful Byzantine frescoes can still be seen. Proceed to Ihlara Valley; a canyon long and deep, crossed by a watercourse where there are 4000 caves and 105 churches and chapels. Lunch during the course of the visits. Dinner and overnight.

3rd day : Cappadocia / Kayseri (km. 61) , Kayseri / İstanbul (by air)

Departure from Cappadocia to Kayseri to take the return flight to İstanbul. Upon arrival at İstanbul, transfer to the hotel.
